Heather Walker, CPM

Heather Walker is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). She is licensed in Maryland (2024) & Virginia (2023). She attended a MEAC-accredited Bachelor of Science Midwifery program at the Midwives College of Utah & completed her clinical training with several independent home-birth & birth-center midwifery practices throughout the DMV. She was trained as an apprentice under both CNM’s & CPM’s.

Heather also received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & Africana Studies from New York University & was formerly a teacher at a NYC non-profit at-risk youth program before she began attending births.  She began her journey into birthwork as a Birth Assistant (BA) & doula in 2010 in Brooklyn, NY & has been serving as a birthworker in the DMV since 2014.

Coming from a Jamaican-American mixed background & raised traveling the world in the US Navy, Heather has been deeply influenced by her multi-cultural heritage & experience.  Experiencing pregnancy & childbirth as a single black woman in the USA showed her first hand the maternal healthcare disparities that impact our communities.  Through her exposure & dedication to healing arts, then becoming the mother of two daughters who were both born at home - her calling to serve womxn throughout the childbearing year unfolded.

In addition to her CPM qualification, Heather has trained or been certified in a rich array of skills that enhance her expertise in the field. These include: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals (BLS), Certified Lactation Consultant (AALP), Certified Birth Doula (ICEA), Certified Community Birth Worker (Mamatoto Village), Newborn Care Specialist, Vaginal Steam Therapy (Womb Sauna), Traditional Malay Belly Binding (Birth Matron), Traditional Closing of the Bones &  Traditional Kemetic Healing Arts (Sounnt).

She recognizes midwifery as a spiritual healing art & she is committed to offering quality care that combines the rich cultural practices she has learned over the years with her own unique approach to intuitive & holistic person-centered care.

Not only do childbearing people contend with the natural challenges of becoming new parents, the US maternal healthcare crisis & imperialism have created great disparities for minority communities.
